As we approach Spring, the season of vitality, rejuvenation, growth, and nourishment, I’d like to share some key tips and methods to help you make the most of this time of year while maintaining balance. Spring is the perfect season to start new projects and explore new ideas. Just as flowers begin to bloom, so does the energy inside us. It’s the "New Year" of the season—a time to set new intentions and goals for yourself. Spring is also a wonderful opportunity to make du'as, reconnect with Allah (SWT), and cultivate a positive outlook on life. The season naturally facilitates growth, both within and around us, and encourages us to embrace change with hope and intention. Each season of the year corresponds to a specific temperament, as everything in nature follows a cycle. Spring, in particular, is associated with the Sanguine Temperament.

On the Sanguine Temperament

The Sanguine temperament is primarily associated with blood, and individuals with a dominant Sanguine temperament tend to be sociable, energetic, lively, and optimistic. During Spring, these qualities are heightened as the season is marked by warmth, renewal, and growth—mirroring the vitality and expansiveness of blood. However, an imbalance during Spring can occur if the Sanguine or Choleric temperaments become overly dominant, as both are linked to heat and activity. Excess energy can lead to restlessness, impatience, and excess heat, which might cause issues such as anxiety, overstimulation, inflammation, or skin conditions like rashes or acne.

For Sanguine-Dominant Individuals

During the Spring season, individuals with a Sanguine temperament may experience a surge in energy, leading to hyperactivity or an overly enthusiastic approach to life. They may feel more eager to socialize, talkative, or prone to overindulgence (eating, drinking, or engaging in too many new ventures). This energy surge can cause them to become overstimulated or distracted, leading to a loss of focus.

Potential Imbalances

    • Excess energy, restlessness, insomnia, inflammatory conditions like rashes or acne.

How to Maintain Balance

    • Diet:
      • Sanguine-dominant individuals should consume cooling foods, such as cucumbers, leafy greens, yogurt, and fruits like pears, apples, and berries, to calm excess heat in their bodies. They should avoid overly spicy, greasy, or salty foods. Eat khichdi 2-4 times a week (simple lentil and rice mix) this will help the stomach with detox and rejuvenate the gut health.  Make a routine of drinking calming and or detoxing teas such as, lavender, lemon balm, Dandelion roots.
    • Lifestyle:
      • Engage in grounding activities like yoga, meditation, or walks in nature. Sleep is essential, so make time to rest and avoid overstimulation in the evening. Setting boundaries by saying "no" to friends and family occasionally can help maintain energy levels. Small gatherings for dhikr or Quran recitation can be especially beneficial for calming the mind and body. A consistent routine is important for Sanguines, who often take on too many new projects they may not complete.   This is also a good time to get hijama done as appropriate to help detox the body.

For Choleric-Dominant Individuals

Choleric individuals are characterized as ambitious, energetic, quick-tempered, and goal-oriented. In Spring, the rising heat can intensify their fiery nature, making them more prone to agitation, frustration, and impatience. This can lead to anger, conflicts with others, or overworking, ultimately resulting in burnout or stress.

Potential Imbalances:

    • Excess heat, inflammation, liver issues, headaches, digestive problems, or feeling overwhelmed.

How to Maintain Balance:

    • Diet: Choleric individuals should focus on cooling, hydrating foods like cucumbers, melons, leafy greens, and fresh salads. Avoid spicy, fatty, or fried foods. Eat khichdi 2-4 times a week (simple lentil and rice mix). Moderation is key to prevent anger or frustration from building up. Fasting or reducing food intake during the day can also help regulate excess energy. Taking a short nap after lunch (30-40 minutes) can refresh the body. Make a routine of drinking calming and or detoxing teas such as, lavender, lemon balm, Dandelion roots.
    • Lifestyle: Engage in calming activities like swimming, yoga, or meditation to reduce heat and stress. Spending time in nature, especially near water, is ideal. Practice patience and balance in work and social interactions.

For Phlegmatic-Dominant Individuals

Phlegmatic individuals are calm, relaxed, slow-moving, and dependable. They may struggle to adjust to the increased warmth and activity during Spring, feeling sluggish or lethargic. They may resist the season's energy, preferring the stability of their predictable environment.

Potential Imbalances:

    • Mucus buildup, low energy, or lack of motivation as the body may not easily respond to the heightened warmth and activity of Spring.

What to Do:

    • Diet: Opt for warm, light, and energizing foods such as lean proteins, fresh vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid heavy, greasy foods or excessive dairy, as they can increase phlegm. Spices like ginger or black pepper can help stimulate digestion and circulation. Drink black seed tea 1-3 times a week as it increases energy.
    • Lifestyle: Encourage physical activity like brisk walks, light jogging, or group exercises to invigorate the body. Activities that promote a sense of renewal, like spring cleaning or organizing, can help counteract sluggishness.   This is a perfect season to get out of our shell and get involved. Set intentions and goals to achieve something new and go for it, take a buddy with you and start small but be consistent. Sanguine season is a tamer season to allow Phlegmatics to explore new ideas without feeling overwhelmed.

For Melancholic-Dominant Individuals

Melancholic individuals are thoughtful, detail-oriented, introverted, and cautious. They may feel the change of the season, but experience anxiety or stress due to uncertainty or fear of change. The rise in energy during Spring can disturb their normally steady and structured nature.

Potential Imbalances:

    • Excessive worrying, digestive issues (e.g., bloating), or depression.

What to Do:

    • Diet: Focus on comforting, grounding foods such as cooked root vegetables, lean proteins, and complex carbohydrates to stabilize mood. Talbina (barley) can also be beneficial for mood and nourishment. Eat pomegranates regularly, as it is good for the heart.  Avoid too many raw foods or caffeine, as they can exacerbate anxiety.
    • Lifestyle: Maintain consistent routines but allow some flexibility. Meditation, journaling, or creative activities like art can provide a good outlet for emotions. Gentle exercise, like tai chi or walking, can help reduce stress. Spring is the best season to practice positivity. Start a daily gratitude journal, focusing on the blessings in your life. Take this time to let go of the past, clear your heart, and move forward with a renewed spirit. Melancholic individuals excel at focusing on one thing at a time, so use this quality to your advantage. Let go of any emotional baggage and fill your heart with hope and positive aspirations. Make du'a and set your intentions, trusting that the Generous King you are asking from holds infinite abundance. With this mindset, just move forward, and you'll start to see new "flowers" blooming in your life, Insha'Allah.

General Recommendations for Spring
